Books on the Bus
In 2016 the non-profit Literacy Task Force of Northern Wisconsin (LTF-NW ) worked with a group of community organization leaders and the Minocqua Public Library. The purpose was to get ideas on how the LTF-NW could become more involved in the community and thus increase the organization's exposure in the community. Tutor training has been a very successful goal of the LTF-NW (200 tutors trained since 2005), but connecting those trained tutors with children and adults with reading difficulties has been a challenge, President Peggy Steber of the Literacy Task Force of Northern Wisconsin appointed a committee to look into the possibilities of doing a popular reading project called Books On the Bus - (BOB). Committee members Lynn Feldman, Karen Demers, and Bob Steber explored what possibilities may exist in rural northern Wisconsin. Local school bus companies were interviewed by the committee. Meetings with school bus owners weren't successful. A member of LTF-NW then suggested working with public transportation providers to model the BOB program after those in the U.K. and New Zealand.
Jim Altenburg, Director of Northwoods Transit Connections -- NTC, was contacted, and the idea of Books On the Bus was discussed. Jim was very interested in doing this project with us. He was invited to our September meeting, and we agreed:
- LTF-NW would supply three book holders for each of fifteen buses,
- NTC will install the net book holders,
- LTF-NW will provide NTC with age-appropriate reading materials that have stickers with contact information for connecting with a tutor
- Both parties will work on developing a rewards program to issue bus passes to readers.
We will kick off the “BOB” program by mid-November. Thanks goes out to donors who allowed this project to get off the ground.
